Loving Our Man & Raising Our Boys

FamilyLife Today with the Raineys had a week on manhood last week. Having a man for a husband & two up & coming young ones to raise up, I was interested. The last two in particular looked good – about women’s influence. Those are the only ones I’ve heard so far but they’re EXCELLENT! Both for wifing & mothering boys. (Now that I’ve heard those two, the first three are a definite listen.)

Their May 10th & 11th broadcast was Barbara talking to women about the stages of manhood & what we do to hinder or encourage our men to either go through those stages or get stuck at adolescence, etc. Good stuff! I want to keep the info for my own reference as well as to pass along in women’s groups as able.

Basic outline for reference…

Five steps to a being a man:
1 – boyhood
2 – adolescence
3 – manhood
4 – mentoring
5 – patriarch

Things wives/moms do to hinder them getting through those steps:
1 -Feed his childishness by being a child herself.

1 Peter 3:9 – Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.

2 – Enable him in his weaknesses and his addictions, and don’t speak the truth.

Romans 13:14 – Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.

3 – Treat him like a boy or speaking to him like he’s a boy, speaking down to him.

Romans 12:3 – Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

4 – Have negative expectations.
5 – Turn his heart away from God. (Solomon)

Things we can do to encourage:
1 – Choose maturity for ourselves.
2 – Speak the truth to him in love. (Esther)

Proverbs 16:21 – The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive.

3 – Praise him when he does step up to manhood.

Ephesians 4:29 – Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

4 – Believe in him that he can become a godly man.

Luke 1:37 – For nothing is impossible with God.

5 – Pursuing godliness ourselves.

Hebrews 4:15,16 – This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
