This and next week. the kids & I are talking about the armor of God in Club from Ephesians 6. Little Bear Wheeler has a lengthy but excellent video on the topic.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
We are to put on first the helmet of salvation. Without receiving Jesus as your Savior, you are without any protection from the enemy (Satan) & his attacks. The helmet protects our mind, as well as our ears, eyes, & mouth (tongue). These are all areas we must daily put under the Lord’s protection. The breastplate of righteousness protects our heart. We are seen as righteous the moment we receive Jesus as our Savior as well. We are seen as righteous in God’s eyes through the power of Jesus’ blood. PTL!! The head & heart, our two most vulnerable areas, are protected by our Lord when we trust Him as Saviour. We still have choices, though. We can “let our guard down”, just like the soldier could put his facial shield up & down. We can choose to pollute our eyes or ears or let wrong things pour out of our mouth or heart. We have to daily choose to let the Spirit control us.
The belt of truth must be gird around our waist. Jesus is the Truth! Then we must put on the “shoes of peace”. CEF talks about this by saying when we have Jesus as our Savior, we can then have the peace that He will never leave us & we are His forever. I like that. But Little Bear talks about our feet & hands spreading the Gospel wherever we go – wherever God sends us. I like that, too.
Then God gave us two tools we must “pick up” every day – the shield of faith & the Sword of the Spirit. “Without faith, it is impossible to please God…” (Hebrews 11:1-6) The shield of faith protects us from those darts Satan throws our way every day – the spirit of fear, anger, jealousy, resentment, pride, etc. We all have our own specialties & Satan knows what they are! We can take the offense against Satan with the Sword – Scripture. It does us no good to just carry It around, though, remember! We have to use It, memorize it so the Spirit can bring It to mind when we need It, meditate on It, study It.
Paul ends by saying, “Pray at all times & on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert & persistent in your prayers for Christians everywhere.” Prayer is one of those incredibly powerful tools that remains a mystery to me! Why God would choose to listen to us never ceases to amaze me. But He does!!! More than that, as Dad used to say, “Things will happen when you pray that wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t prayed”. He used to say the other side of it, too. “If we fail to pray, things will not happen that would have happened if we had prayed.” Amazing!
Are you lifting your fellow soldiers up in prayer? We are commanded to do so. When fellow soldiers fall in battle (give in to Satan’s schemes), s/he needs brothers & sisters in the Lord to pick him up & get him back in the battle! That’s what the Church is all about.
Life is full of battles. Are you dressed for it?
