I heard through the grapevine yesterday that in California they are now putting up a piece of legislation that is trying to outlaw spanking. S.M. Davis has a great CD on spanking “how to’s”. I outlined it a while back. It’s good stuff.
He starts out by saying that you have to daily be working to have your child’s heart. That is so important & it takes work. You have to be purposeful about it. Shepherding a Child’s Heart is a great resource for how to win your child’s heart.
Davis uses an acrostic for CHASTISE…
C – stay Calm
H – Have time to do what you need to do.
A – get Alone with your child.
S – Silence (consider a time of it to express grief – Ezra 9).
T – Talk/explain.
I – Instruct them with your eyes.
S – Spank with a rod (verses your hand).
E – Express love & pray!
A couple of other good points were…
Establish personal responsibility. – Don’t ask, “Why’d you do that?” leaving room to blame others.
Remind the child of your accountability to God.
Start early – get most of the training done before the teen years.
Adjust the training to fit each child – they’re all different.
On a personal note, I have found paint sticks to be a useful tool. You can get them for free, have plenty around (in the van, in your back pack, etc.), they make a loud noise, but really don’t hurt as much.
Some verses for thought…
“If you refuse to discipline your children, it proves you don’t love them; if you love your children, you will be prompt to discipline them.” Proverbs 13:24
“Physical punishment cleanses away evil; such discipline purifies the heart.” Proverbs 20:30
“A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness, but discipline will drive it away.” Proverbs 22:15
“For the Lord corrects those He loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:12
“Discipline your children while there is still hope. If you don’t you will ruin their lives.” Proverbs 19:18
“But God’s discipline is always right & good for us because it means we will share in His holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening- it is painful! But afterward there will be a quiet harvest of right living for those who are trained this way.” Hebrews 12:10b-11
